Our hearts are breaking
On Sunday 6 October, we lost our kind, funny, wonderful, talented son and Catfish frontman and guitarist Matthew Long to cancer. He was just 29.
We were so lucky that Matt was well enough back in June to marry his soulmate Sam - what an incredibly joyous day that was, surrounded by his friends and family. Sam never left his side during his final few weeks and kept his spirits up even in the darkest moments. He loved her fiercely.
Matthew was overwhelmed by the love and support he received from the music community suring his illness - thank you to all the incredible artists who took part in the many benefit gigs across the country, and to those of you who organised and attended them. Thank you to all those of you who donated to the Gofundme crowdfunder and those who pledged on the auction of music memorabilia. This gave him funds to access additional drugs and treatment not available on the NHS, which helped extend his life. We will be forever grateful to each and every one of you who contributed.
Matthew really wanted to live, and we tried everything available to us to try to save him, but sadly the cancer was just too aggressive and fast moving for the chemo. He passed peacefully with Sam and his family at his bedside.
Matthew wrote a song called ‘Archangel’ when his Nana passed a few years ago. I can’t think of a more appropriate way to say how we all feel right now. Goodbye, our beautiful boy.
I can't keep you here
You can't stand the pain
Even though I need you
And the tears fall like rain
Although this goodbye
Tears me up inside
I know you will be
Forever at my side
Just slip away
As I remain
To remember you as you were
So lay down to rest
Let yourself go
Be that eternal friend of mine
I’ll sing you a song
One final time
Be that archangel here by my side.
Donations, if desired, will go to Onslow Ward, Royal Surrey County Hospital, to provide specific equipment
💔❤️🩹❤️
We hope that the donations being made in memory of dear Matt will help to aid the hospital in their fight against cancer.
Thank you for caring for the wonderful, talented and lovely Matt Long and his family. He was a bright, bright star x
